Leeuwarden and The Venue

Leeuwarden, is the capital of the province of Friesland. With a population of around 96,000 it is the second largest city in the north of the Netherlands. Leeuwarden has 3 universities of applied sciences: Van Hall Larenstein, NHL University and Stenden University with a total of around 28,000 students.

European Capital of Culture 2018
In the final selection between the three candidates (Leeuwarden, Amsterdam and Maastricht) for the title: “European Capital of Culture 2018”, Leeuwarden came out winning. The ECoC panel voted unanimously that Leeuwarden had the best potential and capacity to host such an impactful programme. the Panel particularly appreciated Leeuwarden’s holistic bottom-up approach and the unity in the management of the programme.

Leeuwarden is home to the professional football club SC Cambuur. Cambuur has played in the Eredivisie, the highest possible league in Dutch football.

Music & Nightlife
Because Leeuwarden is a city with so many students, there are a lot of bars and a few clubs you can visit during the evening/night.

Transportation in the city
Bicycles will be an optional extra during the conference. Leeuwarden is a very bike-friendly city and it will enable you to move freely through the city without having to pay for cabs or public transport. From the university, every hotel can be reached within 15 minutes.
