ORGANISATION

Educating inspired and innovative students

Van Hall Larenstein is an international university of applied sciences with a focus on sustainability. As a knowledge institute we combine education, delivered by passionate experts, and applied research within the various professorships. We train our students to become high-quality, ambitious and innovative professionals who contribute to a more sustainable world. Van Hall Larenstein has chosen a clear profile with three related areas of focus with which we differentiate ourselves from other universities of applied sciences. Van Hall Larenstein is based on two locations in the Netherlands: Leeuwarden and Velp. The educational and research activities are structured in three domains:

Practice-based research within our Applied Research Centres (ARCs) is always focused on improving professional practice. The professorships operating within these ARCs contribute to innovation in the curriculum of the professionals we educate.

The institutional plan Van Hall Larenstein 2014-2017 'Towards the greenest university of applied sciences' describes our ambitions as a knowledge and research institute.

Sustainable focus

Climate change, globalisation, a growing world population and digitalisation have global effects. Everywhere in the world there is a need for knowledge and highly educated people who can contribute in finding solutions to problems in the field of preservation and sustainable use of land and water, biodiversity, food security and the transfer to a bio-based economy.

Based on its position as a university of applied sciences in the ‘green’ domain with multiple locations and an international network, Van Hall Larenstein can make a sustainable contribution to a better world.

International orientation

Van Hall Larenstein is an international university of applied sciences with an internationally oriented study environment. The work field the students of VHL are prepared for is increasingly internationally focused and has a multicultural character. This means that the acquiring of competences concerning the skill of working in an international environment is not only important for students who aspire to work abroad, but also for students who wish to stay in the Netherlands. By incorporating international competences into the curriculum of the study programmes, Van Hall Larenstein matches the ambition towards internationalisation as formulated by the VSNU (Association of universities in the Netherlands) and the Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences.
