JOHN DOFRIAN REVIEWS FLOWERY VISIT
Students of the Master of Agricultural Production Chain Management and Bachelor students went on a trip to Aalsmeer and Vijfhuizen to visit the International Trade Fair, which was organised in November 2016 by Flora Holland.
‘The event took place at two locations, where we first started with Aalsmeer and later on finalised our trip at Vijfhuizen. The students had the opportunity to visit various booths of different flower companies located in Europe and the rest of the world. The Fair comprised of the different actors in the flower chain: seed producers, cuttings multipliers, packagers and final flower sellers.’
‘It was a really exciting event that students, especially those residing outside Europe, were privileged to attend. They wouldn't normally have the chance to visit such an event. We really enjoyed having interacted with the flower companies’ personnel, learning their operations as well as how the flower business is conducted in Europe.
Apart from the professional interaction point of view, the environment, the way the booths were organised and the flowering design was amazing. Extremely beautiful, I have come to realise that Europeans do love and value flowers.‘
‘The lesson learned from the trip is how Flora Holland regularly brings together its members, flower companies, to share the available opportunities in flower business. Having strong bodies like Flora Holland is substantial for creating a sustainable environment for flower business. Otherwise we learned the personal portraits of the companies’ personnel that are very considerate and customer care oriented, which makes their businesses stable.
On behalf of my fellow students, I express my gratitudeto the management of VHL, course coordinator and the facilitators (Albertien and Mr. Frans Broeder) to enable us to participate in such a useful event.’
