A total of about 28,000 students study in Leeuwarden, with over a third of them living in lodgings in Leeuwarden. For many years, Leeuwarden has ranked in the top three of best Dutch cities with facilities for higher vocational education when it comes to accommodation, nightlife and sports facilities. Leeuwarden was even voted best study town of the Netherlands not so long ago.

Leeuwarden has been declared Cultural Capital of Europe for the year 2018. Of course, this is fantastic for the range of cultural activities and it creates a sense of excitement in the city in the run-up to the year.
