30-03-2017

Marije Strikwold, tutor-researcher in the faculty of Food & Dairy, and her co-authors were awarded a Certificate of Recognition by the American Society for Toxicology (SOT), for their research article about an innovative method as a substitute for animal testing in toxicology research.

The certificate is Strikwolds third recognition by the SOT for her research on deducing safe limiting values for toxic substances without the use of animals, while combining different methods such as physiologically based kinetic models (PBK), in-vitro testing and QSAR’s.

Great incentive

‘Over six years ago I started this research, which is a collaboration between Wageningen University, VHL University of Applied Sciences (VHL) and TNO. The recognition was a nice surprise!’ she says. ‘We are currently creating continuing research at the university of applied sciences in order to scale up the implementation of these alternatives. The “honourable mention” is a great incentive.’

Decrease in animal testing

This research contributes to a decrease in animal testing and the transition to working innovatively and free of animal testing in the Netherlands. The National Committee for Advice on Animal Testing Policies that is supported by the government, has set the goal to make the Netherlands a front runner in 2025 in alternatives to animal testing.
