With three universities of applied sciences and 28,000 students, Leeuwarden is a real student city. For many years, Leeuwarden has ranked in the top three of best Dutch cities with facilities for higher vocational education when it comes to accommodation, nightlife and sports facilities. Leeuwarden was declared European Capital of Culture 2018. This year long event attracted 5 million national and international visitors and you can still see the effects of it: Leeuwarden has become a true international city and is dermined to build further on their status as a cultural capital together with the province of Friesland in which the city is located.
